Portugal ends Octagonal Game in last place – Golf
The beloved men’s national team said goodbye to the Men’s International Octagonal Match with a defeat against Germany, by 3.5-5.5.
The Portuguese athletes had a good performance, but did not avoid the 8th and last place in this competition by nations, which took place at the Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club, in Cádiz, Andalusia. Spain was crowned champion.
In the clash to receive the 7th and 8th places, between the two young women who were at the bottom of the table in the respective groups in the initial phase of all against all (’round robin’), the first point of the day for the team from quinas managed in one of the three pairs games in foursomes, with João Miguel Pereira and João Iglésias beating Ben Kelling/Nils Levi-Bock by 2-1.
In pairs, the result was in favor of the Germans by 2-1, but it could have been the opposite, since Hugo Camelo and Miguel Cardoso lost only on the 18th, by the smallest margin (1 down), against Benedikt Boensch / Nico Kregler.
Diogo Rocha and Rodrigo Santos, facing Philipp Macionga/Mark Süessbier, fought until the 17th hole, where they conceded by 3/1.
In the afternoon, Hugo Camelo got the better of Benedikt Boensch in the first singles encounter, by two holes (2 up). João Pereira, in the third game, won again, as in the morning, against Ben Kelling, by an expressive 7/5. And, in the fifth ‘game’, there was a draw between Diogo Rocha and Philipp Macionga.
Moreover, and still in the singles, João Iglésias and Rodrigo Santos lost to Nils Levi-Bock and Mark Süessbier, respectively, but taking the encounters to the 17th hole. Miguel Cardoso lost the second ‘match’ by 4/3.
The final pitted the winners of the Red and Blue groups, with Spain beating the Netherlands 5-4.
In the previous days, Portugal began to suffer defeats with the Netherlands and England, in both cases by 6-3, and later, the amateur men’s national team lost with Italy by 8-1.
