One of our executives meets in Malta, supports activists who oppose the draft law on abortion
The executive committee of the One of Us pan-European Federation met in Malta for the first time on Saturday, in what it described as a show of support for the “efforts of Maltese civil society, and the all organizations that are affirming the right to life of the unborn child.”
The federation counts more than 40 members across the EU – including the Malta’s Life Network Foundation – and was created by a European Citizens’ Initiative that had collected close to 1.9 million signatures across the EU in an effort to persuade the European Commission to review the bloc’s legislation. about abortion.
“Malta should be proud of the fact that it is the only EU country that does not allow the killing of children in the womb except as an indirect effect of interventions to save the life of the mother,” said the federation. in a statement.
She insisted that the consideration of abortion as a “pseudo-solution for the health problems of pregnant women” goes against the concept that human life began at conception. She even stressed that more should be done to protect every life in the face of the demographic winter that Europe is facing.
In its meeting in Malta, which primarily focused on the federation’s strategic plan for 223, the committee emphasized that there was no fundamental right to abortion.
“This right is not recognized as fundamental in any international human rights instrument. Not even the European institutions, both those of the EU and those of the Council of Europe, have ever recognized this right as fundamental. Indeed, attempts to introduce such a right as fundamental by the European Parliament go against the principle of subsidiarity and no such right can be imposed on the member states according to the EU treaties. Such an attempt also goes against the thinking and inspiration of the founding fathers of the EU such as Monet, Schuman, De Gasperi and Adenauer, who recognized the Christian values on which the history of Europe is based and the right for life is a human right that must be recognized,” said the federation.
The executive committee also promised to closely follow the developments in Malta and to offer all the necessary help to Maltese activists who are campaigning to “continue to protect the values of Maltese society.”
“Malta is a shining example for Europe in terms of protecting human life from conception,” concluded the federation.
Earlier in the day, the president of the One of Us Federation, former MEP and minister of the Spanish Government Jaime Maior Oreja, paid a courtesy visit to Archbishop Charles Scicluna, accompanied by former European Commissioner Tonio Borg and the chairman of the Life Network Foundation Miriam Sciberras.
