Deaths at the Zoo
Sad news came from the Prague Zoo. The youngest elephant named Amalee died on Friday night. She was born on May 9, 2020, so she was only two years old. According to the director of the Prague Zoo, Miroslava Bobek, she died of elephant herpes. He shared the information on social networks.
“Our youngest elephant, Amalee, born on May 9, 2020, succumbed to what is known as elephant herpes. This affects especially baby elephants, and it is a very rapid course that affects even immediate treatment. Unfortunately, this was also the case with Amalee,” said the director of the Prague Zoo Miroslav Bobek on his own Facebook. “It is overwhelming news for all of us, and most of all for breeders. We ask for your understanding that we will not comment on it immediately and we will publish detailed information on the Prague Zoo website only next week.”
Amalee was born in the early hours of May 9, 2020, to Janita the elephant, who was pregnant for 683 days. Miroslav Bobek said that due to the long pregnancy it was very large and weighed 124 kg. Amalee’s father’s name was Ankhor.
Incurable disease
Elephant herpes is according to the website irozhlas.cz so far the most serious disease that affects elephants not only here, but also all over the world. The worst part is that veterinarians are still unable to deal with this disease.
Elephants have been kept at the Prague Zoo since 1933. There were a total of nine of them with Amalee. Among them is the film star Shanti, who starred in the Czech film Alarm in the Clouds with Mr. Tau.
