San Marino. PSD remembers Remembrance Day: “Shoah one of humanity’s darkest chapters”
The PSD relaunches its action for a future free from hatred and violence, respectful of everyone’s rights and freedom
Every January 27 San Marino commemorates the victims of the Holocaust by celebrating the Memorial Day: this figure corresponds to the day on which, in 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was discovered and liberated. Thus, for the first time, the whole world learned about the terrible genocide perpetrated against the Jewish people and other minorities.
The anniversary, already established by the UN General Assembly in 2005, was instituted in the Republic the following year under the name of Annual International Day of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocausthoping that the memory will help to counteract any attempt at denial, to avoid the oblivion that the passing of time and the lack of direct testimony brings with it.
The Party of Socialists and Democrats has always considered it essential to cultivate historical memory and condemn any possible form of racism, hatred and intolerance. Even the PSD, in fact, in October 2021 voted in favor of conferring the honorary San Marino citizenship to Liliana Segre, an Italian survivor and witness of the Holocaust: a recognition strongly desired by the population of San Marino and requested by the Great and General Council through a special Instance of Arengo, which approved it unanimously. Senator Segre’s entry into our community honors the people of San Marino and the Republic, which before and during the Second World War participated perfectly in the protection and hiding, within its territory, of the minorities persecuted by the Nazi-fascists.
Today’s celebration undoubtedly represents a warning for the present and the future, a call not to remain indifferent and to commit ourselves – always and personally – to defending the dignity of all human beings, especially the most fragile, the marginalized and persecuted. Our duty is to work towards this Day is part of a path aimed at forming a robust critical conscience, since only full awareness and greater knowledge of history can strengthen those values and principles that have been able to guide our country through the most complex and dramatic situations.
The PSD thanks those in the Institutions, schools, culture and civil society spheres who have dedicated themselves to promoting in San Marino the various opportunities for study and reflection in progress.
