Prague Zoo: The youngest elephant died, Amalee succumbed to an insidious disease
The director of the Prague Zoo, Miroslav Bobek, shared the tragic news on social media on Friday, January 27. The youngest elephant, Amalee, who would have turned three in May, succumbed to a disease called elephant herpes. The insidious disease has a rapid course, its stopping or immediate treatment suffers. Breeders are devastated. In 2016, the female Sumitra in Ostrava succumbed to the same disease.
“Our youngest elephant, Amalee, born on May 9, 2020, succumbed to a disease known as elephant herpes. This affects baby elephants in particular, and I have a very rapid course that cannot be stopped even by immediate treatment. Unfortunately, that was also the case with Amalee,” wrote Bobek on the social network.

The death of the elephant lady affected all the employees and keepers at the Prague Zoo, as well as the visitors. “It is overwhelming news for all of us, and most of all for breeders. We ask that we will not comment on it immediately and will publish detailed information on the website of the Prague Zoo only next week,” he added to the sad event.
Those who follow Bobek immediately provide an honest bite. “We’re sorry, we saw her on New Year’s Eve…” said one user. Other people send support especially to breeders who take care of elephants in Prague.
Unfortunately, this is not the first case in the Czech Republic. In 2016, the female elephant Sumitra from the Ostrava zoo succumbed to an insidious disease, she had been less than two years old. This was the first confirmed case of death from elephant herpes in our country. At the end of 2013, there was also speculation that the five-year-old elephant Tonya died of herpes in the Prague Zoo. But tests later showed an acute bacterial infection.
