Cologne – The Cologne Uni-Center at the intersection of Luxemburger Strasse and Universitätsstrasse triggered a major fire brigade operation on Thursday evening around 6:40 p.m. Fire broke out in the skyscraper, which is considered one of the largest residential buildings in Europe. The smoke spreads over 42 floors. The cause is not yet known.
Fire in the Uni-Center in Cologne – residents smoke
Some residents reported smoke development in the Uni-Center in Cologne-Sülz on Thursday evening. 50 people gave themselves outside after noticing the smoke, a fire department spokesman told 24RHEIN. Among the residents, 14 were slightly injured by smoke inhalation. However, they do not have to be transported further, the spokesman said.
Brand in the Cologne high-rise: fire extinguished in the Uni-Center
The 135 meter high residential building has another special feature. The basements are on the 3rd and 4th floor, where the fire started. “There was a fire in one of the basement shacks. The first extinguishing work was carried out via the outside stairs,” reports the fire brigade spokesman. The exact cause is not yet known. The 60 emergency services are currently in the process of securing the smoke-filled area and making it accessible again for the residents. The fire has been out since 9 p.m.
Uni-Center in Cologne: One of the largest buildings in Europe
The 50-year-old university center has 968 apartments in which 1,200 people live. The building consists of three wings, the tallest reaches 135 meters. Of the 968 residential units, 378 are rented out by the Studierendenwerk.
