Thessaloniki: The first restaurant that will serve customers dishes from Roma cuisine is being prepared – It will be open every day
The final touches remain in the space. The restaurant with the special name “Amalin”, which means “Friends”, has been painted, cleaned and only the equipment is missing to be able to serve customers. This will be the first restaurant with Roman cuisinewhich will operate in the “heart” of Thessaloniki, at 28 Karaoli and Dimitriou Street, in the city center.
This is an initiative taken by the Roma Women’s Association of Dendropotamos. The idea was “born” with the aim of integrating and empowering women who belong to vulnerable groups of the population and the restaurant will open its doors and operate in February.
The process of cooking and serving will initially be undertaken by five Roma women from the settlement of Dendropotamos, and depending on the traffic and customers, the number of employees will increase.
How the idea for ‘Amalin’ started
“It is the first restaurant by Roma Women. We thought that cuisine and food bring people together. That’s how the idea started”said the president of the Roma Women’s Association, Giannoula Magga, explained, speaking to the APE-MPE radio station “Agency 104.9 FM”.
As he said, the 1st Non-Profit Restaurant in Thessaloniki will be open daily for customers and will serve all the specialties of Romani Kitchensuch as – for example – lamb stuffed in the oven, stew, pilaf and other traditional recipes.
“Everyone will be able to try Romanian cuisine. Society does not know much about the Roma and now it has the opportunity to teach us. In our recipes we use more meat and a lot of excellent herbs,” added Mrs. Manga.
The Roma Women’s Association of Dendropotamos, with a 20-year history, has already decided to make a first call to the citizens of Thessaloniki on February 4, so that the public of the city can get to know and taste for free the flavors that will be served on the restaurant’s menu.
