In Toulouse, the right and its extreme cause a reading of drag queens to be canceled
The right and its extreme have not finished attacking queer culture. Together, they managed to cancel an event intended for children in a spirit of openness and respect for all. The reason: this reading workshop for 3-6 year olds, scheduled for February 18 at the Cabanis media library in Toulouse, is led by the two drag-queen artists Brandy Snap and Shanna Banana.
Not cancelled, to be exact, but “redirected” said the mayor of Toulouse Jean-Luc Moudenc (ex-LR and support of Emmanuel Macron): the workshop will be reserved for adults… This on the pretext that the event can “destabilize part of the public”, he justified himself in a press release on Tuesday.
However, these readings aim “to approach stories that advocate benevolence, respect for others and differences” through themes such as autism or single parenthood, explained Shanna Banana in the local press. The artist adds that it is in no way “to promote his sexual orientation or his way of life”.
The Toulouse left was indignant at this renunciation on the part of the municipality. Vincent Gibert, PS vice-president of the Haute-Garonne departmental council said to himself “stunned to see that the Mayor of Toulouse (has) chosen to back down in the face of homophobic hatred”.
The fachosphere rushed
Because Jean-Luc Moudenc a property ceded to the far right. In December, the Manif pour tous, since had notably occurred in a campaign with strong homophobic overtones and the cry of “Parents! Wake up!”. “This workshop (…) is not educational, fun or aesthetic”, contented himself with arguing the movement.
The fachosphere quickly rushed to spread an online petition, aimed at banning it and uniting 5,000 people. Many Reconquest activists reacted on Twitter, often with violence and openly homophobic terms. As for the Fdesouche site, it has set itself the task of referencing on its site the various reading workshops led by drag queens in France and Belgium. To better deliver to the vindictiveness of artists unfortunately accustomed to anti-LGBT attacks.
Before a reading of tales by the Broadway French drag-queen troupe which took place this Saturday, January 21 in Lamballe (Côtes d’Armor), their director Mathieu Guiral, said to himself “not reassured by the idea of coming, when we see what is told and especially distorted on the networks”, did he designate at the site actu.fr.
In Lamballe, members of Reconquête but also of Jean-Frédéric Poisson’s Via-la Voie du Peuple party also sought to have the event canceled. According to the departmental delegate of the Catholic movement, this reading of tales “propagates a vision of sexuality that is destructive for the interpersonal relationships necessary for a sustainable society and in particular the family, the pillar of this society”. Words that in no way correspond to the reality of the show, which may well have been given.
