The Walk of Remembrance organized by La Genga returns to San Marino
“There were about 200 people on 27 January 2020 at the start of the Walk of Memory, traditionally organized by La Genga (San Marino Hikers Association). No one could have ever imagined what would happen in a few days, with the arrival of a pandemic that has caused so many deaths, which has infected more than 20,000 San Marino citizens, which has monopolized hospital activities and blocked all activities”.
You dice it La Genga (San Marino Hikers Association)underlining in a note that in any case “we are not out of it now: Covid is still there with its thousand mutations, but we have learned to manage it thanks to medical progress, vaccines, the skill of hospital staff”.
And so, after three years, the Genga proposes perhaps the most significant appointment of its hiking calendar: the walk on the places where San Marino, a neutral country, experienced the most terrible episodes of the Second World War.
To guide the participants in the memory of those years “so difficult, yet so edifying for the acts of solidarity and heroism”, will be Valentina Rossi, Philosophy and History teacher in high schools, translator, researcher, writer of important texts on local history and member of the Scientific Committee of the San Marino Center for Historical Studies.
Laa Rossi will intervene by telling the bombing of June 26, 1944 and the political and social context in which it happened.
Participation in the walk is free, with no need to book.
The appointment is in Borgo Maggiore, under the arcades, at 8pm on Friday 27 January.
After the presentation, the route will wind through the Borgo and Montalbo tunnels, then go back up to the city with a visit to the historic center and the places of the bombing.
Return to Borgo Maggiore through the Costa dell’Arnella for a refreshment based on desserts and mulled wine, which will be served under the portico. Arrival scheduled for 11-11.30 pm.
It is a first-level route, that is, with few climbs. Length: 6.5 kilometers. Difference in altitude: 200 metres. Trekking shoes, flashlights and clothing suitable for the season are recommended.
The route can be done in any weather, even with snow. Excursion fee: 3 euros.
