– Keeping this award for the honor of a lifetime, the unpaid honor of working with Jan Nowak Jeziorański at a time when the world changed. We met in the late summer of 1987, when I became an official at the State Department, dealing with Poland. It was the era of Yalta Europe, Europe divided. In 1987 in Washington, in the American media, in universities and in think tanks, it was assumed that Yalta Europe was permanent, that the Iron Curtain was a sad but high and indelible fact, said Daniel Fried.
– Polish was appreciated in the USA, but it was correct that her case was hopeless. Jan Nowak did not think so. He strives for a simple and democratic Poland, mark the original democracy of Europe – the standard.
