Explosive increase in crack use Brussels: ‘Most popular drugs in our streets’ | Abroad
The police in the Belgian capital Brussels are “incredibly concerned” about the rapid rise in the use of crack. That write the Belgian newspapers The standard NL The newspapaer Saturday.
The popularity of crack, a processed form of cocaine, has spread from Paris, says Koen De Brandt, chief superintendent in the Brussels South police zone. “It’s one of the worst drugs on the market.” The effects of crack are faster and more intense than cocaine, whatever makes the drug. Crack is very popular among people who are homeless.
Transit, a shelter for drug users, estimates that no less than three quarters of drug users in Brussels take crack. It has become the most popular drug on our streets.
The explosive development has not gone unnoticed by Brussels residents: between January and October 2022, the STIB public transport company received 1,200 reports of open drug use. That is 70 percent more than the year before.
According to the director of Transit, the fact that the federal government announced that users of hard drugs can receive fines of up to 1,000 euros will not do much good. Crack users are so vulnerable that they can’t pay certain fines, he says.
