A real winter has returned to the Czech Republic. The emergency services are busy. A person died in an accident in Prague. A number of roads across the country are passable with extra care. In Trutnovsk, the bus ended up in a ditch again. The second level of avalanche danger applies in the Giant Mountains.
On Saturday around five in the morning, the emergency services went to the accident on the Radotín bridge in the direction of the D1 in Prague. “We are interfering with the delivery of a truck,” they informed on twitter Prague firefighters.
A 49-year-old man died in the accident. “The passenger of one of the cars suffered very serious injuries, from which he died on the spot. In the end, only one of the drivers, a 44-year-old man who only had minor scratches on his body, was taken to the hospital for further treatment. He went to the University Hospital in Motole” added Jana Poštová, spokeswoman for the rescuers.
In Trutnovsk on Saturday morning, a bus ended up in a ditch. “Firefighters secured the site of the morning traffic accident of a bus that crashed into a ditch near the village of Hajnice. Nobody was injured. We helped to transport three passengers, the recovery of the bus will be ensured by a specialized company,” the fire department said social network. In Horní Maršov, the car ended up in the river bed again. One person was injured.

Firefighters in the Moravian-Silesian region responded to 26 snow-related incidents from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday. “These are mostly bogged down buses, spreaders and cars on Class II and III roads. Everything was done without injuries or major damage,” they said on twitter Moravian-Silesian firefighters.
A number of roads across the Czech Republic are closed due to a layer of new snow, according to the website dopravniinfo.cz drive with extra caution. Drivers should therefore be very careful on the roads.
The second level of avalanche danger applies in the Giant Mountains. According to the mountain service, medium-sized avalanches can be expected, which usually stop still on the slope. There is currently 20 to 60 centimeters of snow on the ridges.
Snow warning
A snow warning is in effect from Friday, 10:00 PM until Saturday afternoon for part of it Pardubice, Olomouc, Zlín and Moravian-Silesian regions. According to meteorologists, up to 15 centimeters of new snow can fall in 24 hours.
“When travelling, it is recommended to follow the traffic news and drive very carefully. Don’t forget your winter equipment, have snow chains when traveling to the mountains, winter tires with sufficient tread are necessary. In the mountains, you must follow the instructions of the mountain service,” he advises website Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.
The warning also applies to the part Central Bohemia, South Bohemia, Liberec, Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary and Ústí Regions and Vysočín since Saturday.
15 centimeters of snow has already fallen in Ústíki, 25 centimeters in Ostrava and Beskydy. “The decrease will stop from the southeast on Saturday during the afternoon hours. It will decrease permanently and abundantly in the mountains,” said meteorologist Dagmar Honsová.
Warning for snow tongues
Meteorologists are also warning of snow tongues from Friday 22:00 in the area Pardubice, Olomouc, Moravian-Silesian and Zlín regions. From Saturday, the warning also applies to the part Central Bohemia, Liberec, Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Ústí Region and Vysočín.
ČHMÚ expects problems in transport. Some roads may be impassable. “Increased caution is necessary when driving a car. When traveling, you need to follow the traffic news. In the mountains, follow the instructions of the mountain service,” they appeal.
And you have to expect cold weather after the weekend as well. According to the forecast of the meteorologists, the days will be cloudy to overcast, in some places it will also be partly cloudy. At night, temperatures will drop to −7 °C, with reduced cloud cover k −11 °C. The highest daily temperatures will be between −2 to 3 °C.
