an informational cyber attack is being carried out against Lithuania
The Migration Department reported that e-mails are being distributed to various addressees in Lithuania using a non-existent e-mail address of the Migration Department. They indicate that, in cooperation between Lithuania and Ukraine, the Migration Department takes refugees from the Ukrainian war in Lithuania, and this measure is not related to the performance of military service. The letters include a form asking for the personal data of Ukrainian citizens to be sent to an e-mail address supposedly belonging to the Embassy of Ukraine.
According to the VSD’s assessment, by purposefully spreading false messages directed against war refugees, which aim to promote distrust of state institutions and disrupt their activities, Lithuanian residents are opposed to the Ukrainians who arrived, inciting discord, raising ethnic and social tensions, forming hostile moods and turning Lithuanian society against Ukraine. The content and targets of the informational cyber operation are consistent with Russian propaganda narratives, the report notes.
After performing the initial analysis of e-mails by the VSD, it was found that along with false messages sent by Lithuanian state institutions, malicious software is distributed in e-mail attachments. Upon receipt of a suspicious e-mail of a similar nature, VSD recommends neatly attaching attachments and not clicking on links embedded in the e-mail.
Residents and institutions who have information about false reports directed against war refugees or other relevant information are requested to inform the Department of State Security at the following contacts: [email protected] or 8 700 70 007.
