A young man killed a teacher with a machete in Michli. Experts in ambulatory treatment
/PHOTO GALLERY/ On Friday, January 20, the Prague Municipal Court returned to the case of Jaroslav Řehák, who, according to the indictment, killed a teacher at a secondary vocational school in Prague’s Michla last spring. They heard that the young man needs outpatient treatment. Řehák faces up to twenty years in prison. The young man confessed to the crime, in December he told the court that the teacher “provoked” him. The trial now continues with the reading of witness statements.

According to the experts heard by the court, Řehák does not suffer from a mental illness, but his speech development is impaired. Before killing the teacher, according to experts, the effect was increasing with him, among other things, due to the fact that the teacher did not respect the lessons he had missed. “He had the feeling that the teacher was after him, that he was drowning on purpose,” one of the experts told the court.
But the experts also stated that Řehák was able to recognize the illegality of his actions. His cognitive abilities were preserved at the time, but his control abilities were reduced. “He saw an unsolvable situation and decided to remove the source of the difficulties. And that was the teacher,” the expert explained.

Outpatient treatment combined with psychotherapy is recommended for the accused expert over a possible prison sentence. According to them, constitutional treatment is not necessary, he is not currently dangerous to society. According to experts, this is a preventive measure so that Řehák does not act impulsively if he finds himself in a crisis situation again.
According to the indictment, the young man killed the seventy-four-year-old teacher on the morning of the 31st of last year, the teacher having marked him as insufficient in the communication technology subject a day earlier. Due to the bad grade and also due to the long-term bad relationship between him and the teacher, according to the public prosecutor, the defendant developed a sense of grievance and frustration.

The prosecution claims that the young man first wanted to burn the teacher, but then decided to kill the teacher immediately. At the school in Ohradní Street, he hid in the toilets and waited for the teacher to enter his office. There, the young man attacked him with a 60-centimeter-long machete, inflicting several wounds on his head, neck and back. Doctors could no longer help the victim.
After questioning the experts, the court read witness statements, especially those of school employees and pupils. Some students answered that the teacher was not fair, while others said that he was strict but also tried to help during exams. Judge Tome Frankič subsequently adjourned the hearing, he will try to summon a witness who stopped studying because of the deceased teacher’s teaching style.
The young man testified in court in December, when the court said that the teacher humiliated him during the exam and bullied him. After the court read the testimony of the wife of the slain teacher on Friday, January 20, he apologized to the survivors for his actions.
