In 2022Tourists have found their way back to Luxembourg City
LUXEMBOURG – The Luxembourg City Tourist Office reports a “recovery of tourist activity” last year, driven in particular by the reopening of the Pétrusse casemates.
“The reopening of the Casemates de la Pétrusse was the key event of 2022”, underlines the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) when taking stock of the past year. The LCTO notes a “promising trend for tourism” in the capital and a confirmed recovery in activity, after the sudden stop caused by the Covid. “Tourists came in droves” and the LCTO is optimistic for 2023.
Thus, the Casemates, reopened on June 2 in the presence of the Grand Duke, welcomed 8,504 people in 657 visits, an occupancy rate of 95% for the galleries highlighted by light effects and sound effects. The Grand Ducal Palace also has access to the world, during its summer guided tours in several languages, with 5,195 visitors, for a record occupancy rate of 99%.
The LCTO also organizes guided tours throughout the City throughout the year. Last year, 3,152 were anticipated there. This is still far from the 7,138 visits in 2019 but “this corresponds to the efforts to offer a qualitative and personalized offer”, justifies the LCTO, which has highlighted the progression of visits with personal guide.
The Germans in the lead
Although partly hidden by the work in progress on the Knuedler, the LCTO’s tourist information office saw 102,960 people pass by in search of information, advice, plans, tickets for a visit… Which still makes 22% less than before the pandemic, but “the LCTO welcomed almost as many visitors during the high season and long weekends as in 2019”. Thus, in August 2022, 20,086 visitors passed through the LCTO, barely 456 less than in August 2019.
The year was also marked by the return of foreign tourists, first and foremost the Germans, which appears, with 27,248 visitors, 26% of tourists passing through the LCTO in 2022. The French follow, with 17,487 visitors (17% overall), ahead of the 14,808 Dutch (14%). National visitors come just behind, with 7,210 residents, ahead of the 5,995 Belgians.
