Prague – The perpetrators of the theft of jewelry worth several million crowns in Prague were helped to reveal a cup with drinks in the hands of one of them. Last October, a pair of thieves broke into an apartment in Italská Street, but the camera footage from around the crime scene was not of sufficient quality. However, one of the perpetrators in the video was holding a cup with a straw in his hand, which could have come from a nearby establishment. The video recording can identify the person available from there. Prague police spokesman Jan Rybanský told ČTK today. According to him, the perpetrators face up to eight years in prison due to the high level of damage.
Two men entered the apartment in Italská Street last October 18 in the afternoon without using violence. They took away small prizes, one thousand euros (roughly 24,000 CZK) and a safe where the owners had jewelry worth several million crowns. After detaining the suppliers of suspicious jewelry for more than 2.3 million crowns, they are searching for other valuables. The police charged both men with theft and trespassing, Rybanský wrote on website.
Camera footage from around the scene of the crime was not enough to clearly identify the perpetrators, but the criminal investigators did not help themselves even in the hands of one of the men, the spokesman said. Therefore, the investigators assumed that the thieves may have visited an establishment near the scene of the crime before committing the crime. “This was indeed confirmed by the investigation, and the criminal investigators obtained video recordings from the establishment where the men had refreshments before the crime. Thanks to them, they identified an ‘old acquaintance’ on October 24, i.e. six days after the crime, who had already been tried for similar criminal activity in the past.” said Rybanský.
In addition, the man suspected of theft attended the court on the given day, where the investigators went to get him. “During the interrogation, he confessed to the crime and subsequently handed over the jewelry, which he had hidden with his girlfriend. The police tracked down the second suspect that same day in the evening hours on Wenceslas Square. Some of the stolen jewelry was stolen, and he was also wanted nationwide. He confessed to the theft at the police station and subsequently handed over the rest of the stolen loot he had at home to the police,” added the spokesperson.
