“These are extremely attractive animals that have not only exhibition value, but also educational value. Lizards tend to have different horns or growths, but only this species is unmistakably proud of such a characteristic leather collar,” said curator of reptiles Petr Velenský, adding that the up to 26 centimeters wide neck structure is made of skin reinforced by long cartilages.
The collared agama is unmistakable thanks to its leathery collar. He stretches it not only in danger, but also uses it during courtship.
According to Velenský, the collared agama benefits from this advantage, especially in the event of a threat – by expanding the collar, it appears larger and, in combination with a threatening hiss, drives off the predator more easily. “The collar also fulfills other functions: agams like to shake their veil during courtship or only partially open it as part of thermoregulation,” explained Velenský.
Collared Agamas inhabit dry forests and bush in northern and northeastern Australia, as well as southern New Guinea. They grow up to 90 centimeters long, half of which is the tail. These are mostly insectivorous lizards, so even in Prague they mainly get crickets and locusts. The ration is supplemented with vegetables – lettuce, carrots and Chinese cabbage.

Four almost two-year-old individuals can be seen in the Prague Zoo: a male and three females. Visitors can find animals and reptiles in the terrarium in the Pavilion, which are often found together with flatback turtles.
“Given that collared agamas are diurnal animals and like to sit in vertical positions tightly pressed against a tree trunk or branch, it is a good idea to look for them in the upper part of the exhibit, near light sources,” pointed out zoo spokesman Filip Mašek.
