1871: King Wilhelm I of Prussia was crowned Kaiser of a united Germany. Before unification, German-speaking Central Europe had consisted of a patchwork of states, many of which were small kingdoms, duchies, principalities and city-states. Much of the credit for the collection has been attributed to the Prime Minister of Prussia, Otto von Bismarck. Through victorious wars against Prussia’s enemies, he had aroused enthusiasm for the German unification idea. Bismarck also became the first chancellor of the new empire. The coronation of Kaiser Wilhelm took place in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. The choice of location was a demonstration of power over France, which had just suffered defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Coronation Day 18 January went down in history as the founding day of the German Empire.
1921: The first sausage carts appeared in Copenhagen. The idea was borrowed from German cities, where the invention of the kerosene burner had enabled mobile heating of food. As many as six carts were to be seen in the Danish capital on the opening day, when the city council’s decision to allow street sales of hot sausages came into force for the third time. The sausage carts became a well-known and beloved feature of Copenhagen’s cityscape. According to Danish Wikipedia, the carts had their heyday from around 1950 to the end of the 1970s, when the sellers of red sausages began to seriously compete with stationary fast food restaurants. In 2010, Dansk Radio was able to report that a third of Copenhagen’s hot dog carts had disappeared in just three years. While the city had about 400 carriages in 1950, the number had dropped to 60 by 2010.
1964: The TV series «Vi på Saltkråkan» premiered on Swedish TV. The screenplay was by Astrid Lindgren, who had written the story directly for TV and only later published it in book form. The action takes place on a fictitious island in Stockholm’s archipelago and depicts the meeting between permanent residents and a holidaying family from the capital. The summer paradise that surrounds them is actually the island of Norröra in Norrtälje, where the recording took place. The series about Tjorven, uncle Melker, Malin and the others at Saltkråkan became hugely popular and made the actors Swedish folk. In Norway, too, «Vi på Saltkråkan» became a phenomenon after NRK broadcast the series for the first time in 1965. In 2021, it became known that SVT is in the process of re-recording the series, which must be completed in 2024.
