Panelák records: Which is the longest or the most expensive in Prague
Panels. Houses that many people predicted would only have a short lifespan or that are sometimes the target of ridicule. And yet half a million Praguers live happily in them. That’s why we decided to dedicate the next part of our series Žít Prahu to prefab houses.
Which records associated with Prague apartment buildings should you not miss?
The first block of flats
For the first time, the people of Prague could move into a panel house as early as 1955, in Ďáblice. At first glance, you wouldn’t guess that this is a block of flats – it only has three floors, plaster and a gable roof.
The first larger panel construction
In 1957, the Zelená liška panel housing estate near Budějovická was completed. Even the houses here differ from more modern blocks of flats – for example, they have house signs or perhaps decorative cornices and portals.
The largest panel housing estate
It probably won’t surprise anyone that this is South City. I offer an incredible 26,000 apartments, which are inhabited by more than 80,000 Prague residents. The tallest block of flats is located in Jižní Město, specifically near the Háje metro station. Named Kupa, it rises to a height of 81 meters and has 23 floors. By the way, there is a restaurant on the 22nd floor, so everyone can enjoy the view.
The most expensive block of flats
Flats in panel houses are generally not among the most expensive, which is why they are in such demand in the metropolis. However, there are exceptions here too – a 50-meter flat in a block of flats on Invalidovná will cost 7 million crowns. Invalidovna is currently one of the most promising neighborhoods in Prague.
The longest panel house The panel house in Zelenohorská Street in Bohnice is not only the longest in Prague, but also in the whole of the Czech Republic. It is 300 meters long, has 18 entrances and 12 floors, representing 612 apartments. By the way, a cable car should soon lead to Bohnice.
And what do you think about prefab houses? Do you live in some, or can you not imagine living in a “rabbit hut”? Let us know in the comments!
