Only 17% of inhabitants of the Toulouse agglomeration are aware of the new waste sorting instructions
Since January 1, 2023, the inhabitants of Toulouse Métropole have been invited to apply new sorting instructions. The objective is to fight effectively against the pollution generated by plastics of all kinds. This is a national regulatory obligation. Two weeks after the implementation of this novelty, only 17% of the population is aware.
Overflowing bins, insufficient collections?
You know it, we talked about it on France Bleu Occitanie and on francebleu.fr
since the beginning of the month, the rules for sorting garbage have changed in the Toulouse metropolis.
All packaging is now to be put in the recycling bin (blue or yellow, it depends on your neighborhood). Plastic, cardboard, paper or metal, yoghurt pots, toothpaste tube, everything goes to sorting but with this extension your bin may be overflowing? This is the case of Anne’s trash can, a little too full for her taste since January 1 and the new sorting instructions: “we are a household of four, our trash is only emptied once every two weeks and the container is very full, on cup I wouldn’t say that we put the youngest in it so that he settles with his feet but almost, sometimes it tends to overflow but we still manage to close the lid“.
Anne lives in Villeneuve Tolosane where the classic bin is picked up once a week and the recycling bin every two weeks. In Toulouse, the passage of garbage collectors is more frequent, but for Pauline with the new sorting instructions, the rounds are no longer suitable: “it’s twice the classic trash and once recycling, it would be necessary to reverse the days and switch to once the classic trash and twice the recycling“
For the time being, the rate and frequency of collections remain repeated. Toulouse Métropole indicates that it will adapt to the needs of the inhabitants as and when.
With the extension of the sorting instruction, the recycling bin should increase by 4 kilos per year and per inhabitant. If you need a bigger bin, just add some. apply to Toulouse Métropole
it’s free.
No increase in the household waste collection tax
Of the 37 municipalities that make up Toulouse Métropole, the household waste collection tax amounts to 120 euros per inhabitant and per year, elected officials do not receive the increase in the next two to three years.
A new sorting center with optical waste reader
Sorting your trash is good, but it is still necessary that the waste is then properly recycled. The Toulouse and Bessières sorting sites may have been recently fitted out, but they do not make it possible to recycle all the packaging and that even disturbs the inhabitants. This Toulousaine, Sylvaine, would like to know how her sorted waste is recycled: “we are only told about the extension of sorting, I would like it to be followed by the extension of recycling, I am very skeptical“.
Development work may have been done in the sorting centers of Toulouse and Bessières, but they only make it possible to separate the fibrous waste non-fibrous waste, it is then necessary to send part of it to Lozère and Montauban for over-sorting.
The situation is temporary, pending a new, larger and more modern sorting site in Bessières, explains the sorting center department manager at Decoset, Dominique Ferreira: “aith the extension of sorting instructions, there are many new plastics that the human eye is not able to recognizeso we need machines to sort these different plastics between them, we have to mechanize more and the choice that has been made is to build a new larger and more modern site in Bessières then to close the two existing sites.”
The future sorting center in Bessières, with an optical reader, should open in 2025.
