Graduated Health Advisors Hazardous Substances (GAGS) diploma received
On Tuesday 17 January, the GGD GHOR Nederland in Utrecht held the graduation ceremony for twelve GAGS graduates (Health Advisory Hazardous Substances). The GAGSs are based on different regions and receive the diploma of the Netherlands Institute for Public Safety (NIPV). A festive afternoon, in which, in addition to the congratulations, presentations were also given and those present had the time to talk to each other.
New way of training
Five years ago, the Directors of Public Health (DPGs) decided to introduce a new training method in order to guarantee sufficient and high-quality GAGS in all regions. The focus shifted to the ‘tailor-made’ management of future GAGSs. They could start with a continuous moment, with practical guidance and theoretical modules from knowledge institutions, chain partners and ministries. Attention is paid to specific regional needs. The DPGs also determined which requirements a GAGS must meet. The exams take place at the NIPV.
In action with hazardous substances
A GAGS is deployed by the GHOR (Medical Assistance Organization in the Region) in the event of a (suspected) incident involving hazardous substances. Think of possible leaks, smoke from a fire, asbestos and people who become unwell due to an unknown cause. The GAGS have doubts about the health risks for the population. There are various measures that must be taken to prevent or limit health damage as much as possible. Consider, for example, closing windows and doors. A GAGS bases its advice, among other things, on measurements by the fire service, RIVM and/or on the basis of health complaints of those involved.
