“What job do you want to do later? A frequent question asked in family meals or in classrooms to millions of middle school, high school or university students. Today, some professionologists contributed their expertise to support young people in their Professional orientation.
This is the case of Laure Deville based in Bordeaux (Gironde). She is one of eight professionals working in France: “It’s a new profession, using a different method. We are neither guidance counselors nor coaches. »
Involve the young
A radio journalist for 15 years, Laure Deville changed paths in September 2022. No more interviews, today she accompanies young people in their orientation by adopting the “GoFutur” method, an approach in which the young carries out an in-depth discovery of the professions.
A process initiated by two appointments, one with the parents and then another with the young person. After this meeting, Laure starts the orientation course without carrying out an assessment. The challenge: to make young people proactive.
I’m not going to tell the young person “you’re going to do this, you’re going to do this activity”. It is he who will discover it over the eight stages.
During his exploration, the young person will find two or three professions that correspond to him. From then on, Laure offers him studies in line with his choice of orientation. A proposal based on personality. “If a young person doesn’t like competition, we won’t offer him a preparation course,” explains the Bordelaise.
The cost of this tailor-made support is 900 euros (the first two interviews are free). “The amount is rarely a brake because a missed year of study costs on average 7,000 euros,” says Laure Deville. In return, the professions undertake to follow the young person until he finds a job.
De-dramatize orientation
College students, high school students or students in reorientation, Laure has already worked with a diversity of profiles. On average, the support is three months for a secondary school student, but this support can be provided in an emergency.
Often, people who contact Laure have had a bad experience with a guidance counsellor. “Parents turn to us because they feel it’s not personalized,” says the former journalist.
Few resources are allocated to guidance in the public system, there is sometimes a single guidance counselor for several high schools. A guidance counselor cannot spend as much time with a young person as we do.
Since the beginning of the month, the telephone of the professionologist has not stopped ringing with the opening of Parcoursup on January 18. “The parents who call me are completely stressed”, testifies Laura Deville.
Anxiety sometimes transmitted to young people, who are concerned about their future, but Laure reassures them: “We play down the orientation, we tell them: “you will find a job that you like! » »
With the GoFutur method, the professions want to modernize guidance and make it “the expression of a life project” for young people.
