The municipal government recalls that five years must pass after the death of a personality to dedicate a road to him, while Valents accuses him of contempt for Catholics
Barcelona City Council has for now rejected the Valents idea to dedicate a street to Benedict XVIdeceased at the end of 2022. The local executive of Barcelona en Comú and the PSC recalled that municipal regulations establish that five years must pass after the death of a person before submitting a proposal to name a city road and that the paper of the gazetteer examine it. On the other hand, the conservative formation – which emerged from the municipal group headed by former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls – has opined that its suggestion has been dismissed out of contempt for Catholics.
the councilor Marilen Barcelo He has asked that Barcelona dedicate a street to Francisco’s predecessor “because of his role in the Church, his work and his great connection with Barcelona.” In this sense, Barceló has recalled the visit of Benedict XVI to the Catalan capital in 2010 to consecrate the Sagrada Familia like basilica.
In his turn, the councilor for Democratic Memory, Jordi Rabasa (Barcelona en Comú), has rejected the request, emphasizing that the regulations that govern the presentation of the gazetteer “for decades” do not allow the study of proposals for names of personalities until a glow has elapsed since their death. “We are not opening this debate now. Let there be those who have to be and, in five years and if it suits, we will discuss what space can be or not for the person you propose”, he has responded to Barceló.

At the same time, Rabassa has tried to dissuade Valents from seeking a controversy about whether Benedict XVI should name a road in the city. In this sense, the councilor has avoided assessing the figure of Joseph Ratzinger and his papacy, although he has questioned that he had a close relationship with Barcelona.
“It would have been a miracle if they had agreed to this request”, Barceló ironized. In turn, he has demanded from Rabassa that he expressed his opinion about the recently deceased Pope. “Do you think that Benedict XVI deserves to have a street in his honor and because of his career in Barcelona or does he have no opinion on the matter?” He has summoned him. “My opinion is irrelevant. We have five years ahead of us to wait for a miracle”, Rabassa joked.
