Onset of winter in Munich and the region with plenty of snow is imminent
Snow, ice and frost are currently in short supply. January is far too mild, but that could now change in Munich and other parts of Bavaria.
Update from January 13, 1:25 p.m.: The German Weather Service expects plenty of snow next week. “By Wednesday there could be 5 to 10 centimeters of fresh snow in the foothills of the Alps, maybe even 15 centimeters in some places. And in the mountains, a total of 20 to 30 centimeters is expected, in the Allgäu even up to 30 centimeters in certain areas,” said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday. It can also get frosty throughout Freistaat at night.
Finally snow again in Bavaria: Ski fans can look forward to white splendor
The middle of the week in particular could then bring winter sports enthusiasts the hoped-for white splendor: “Especially Tuesday to Wednesday there are current chances that there will be heavy and also long-lasting snow in the Alps, so that we will have 5 to 10 there, maybe even 15 to 15 in places Expect 20 centimeters,” said the DWD expert. In the nights there is frost that is widespread throughout Bavaria, and when the sky is clear, temperatures below minus 10 degrees are also possible.
First report from January 13, 10:25 a.m.: Munich – January has been everything so far, just not wintry. Far too mild temperatures, plus lots of wind and rain for the first month of the year so far. In December it was in large parts of Bavaria a short winter interlude given, but it did not last long. But do snow and ice have a chance of a comeback this season? A look out of the window seems to destroy all hope, a look at the forecasts seems to indicate a different direction.
Winter maps for Munich and the region – a significant change in the weather is imminent
In the next few days, according to wetteronline, Munich and the region will continue as they are now. Including the coming weekend, it will remain cloudy, with almost ten degrees far too mild and rainy. Stronger gusts are possible on Sunday. But then, at the beginning of the new week, something seems to want to happen. “Everything points to cooler weather,” explains weather expert Dominik Jung. And indeed: The temperatures in the state capital have fallen – as of now – a little more every day in the new week.

Snow all the way to Munich – Winter is returning to the region
On Monday, January 16th and Tuesday, they should still reach up to four degrees during the day. Then the next few days should reach around zero degrees, at night it will probably go back to the slightly frosty area after a long time. In addition, snow signals appear again and again. This was also confirmed by Dominik Jung’s snow map, which shows the total heights for next Thursday, January 19th. For Munich are therefore 5-10cm expected. A look to the south shows that significantly more fresh snow is expected just a few kilometers south of Munich, from west to east of Bavaria.
Weather: Expert with devastating January verdict
How long the weather trend will last is unclear. However, it is now almost certain that the extremely mild weather of the previous month is coming to an end. After that, it is anything but normal, as Jung explains: “The first half of January 2023 is the warmest first half of January since weather records began in 1881. It has never been so warm in Germany during this period. We are currently a whopping 8.4 (!!!) degrees above the average climate.”
