Genoa, new look for Cristoforo Colombo airport, work is underway
The modernization works of the Cristoforo Colombo airport in Genoa will start today, Monday 16 January. The interventions inside the existing building foresee the complete revision of the departures area, with larger and brighter spaces, the increase in the number of check-in counters, a new area for security checks and the revision of the flows for flows of departing passengers.
“The launch of this construction site is a further step forward in the modernization and expansion works of the terminal – commented Paolo Odone, president of Genoa Airport -.
We will do our best to avoid any inconvenience to users for the entire duration of the works. The new airport will be more beautiful, welcoming and efficient. We can’t wait to introduce it to our passengers.”
The objective of the works is to increase the commercial and restaurant areas and improve the travel experience of passengers. The works will not impact the operations of the Genoese airport.
The first phase of the construction site will last 15 days until 31 January with the removal of the structure underneath the two-flight staircase that connects the first and second floors. The second phase, starting at the end of January and will last around 2 months, will see the construction of new fixed and escalator connecting stairs between the departures floor and the second floor.
In the summer, the additional east block will be integrated, which will extend over 3 floors and 5,500 square meters, bringing the total area of the airport to over 20,000 square meters. The new areas will come into operation progressively until the completion of the works, scheduled for the beginning of 2024.
The total expenditure for the expansion and modernization of the terminal will be approximately 20 million euros. Of these, 11.3 million were allocated by the port system authority of the western Ligurian Sea as part of the extraordinary investment programme. Another 5 million has been allocated by the Liguria Region with resources from the Regional Strategic Fund to support the infrastructural and technological development of the airport.
