On January 15, 1992, Bulgaria was the first in the world to gain the independence of Macedonia. This residence, after on September 8, 1991, the citizens of the then Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were called to decide on the question “Do you support an independent and sovereign Macedonia with the right to enter the future union of Yugoslav states”. A total of 71.85% of the registered voters voted in the referendum, the majority of whom – over 90% – declared for the creation of an independent state. On September 18, 1991, the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia adopted an official declaration to recognize the results of the referendum and to declare the country’s independence.
Bulgaria was the first country in the world to recognize Macedonian independence. This was done with a declaration of the National Assembly on January 15, 1992. Shortly afterwards, with the mediation of President Zhelyu Zhelev, Russia also recognized Macedonia’s independence.
There were several types of considerations, Zhelev said at the time. The conjunctural ones were not to think that we listen to each other and have claims towards Macedonia. Nor should they think that we are dependent on the West’s decision. In fact, Bulgaria takes this step contrary to the decision of the low union, which cannot take such a decision due to the opposition of Greece. Turkey became the second country to recognize Macedonia. She did this for the existence of Bulgaria, recalls in “Maritsa”.
“At the meeting with the then Turkish Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel, he emphasized that Turkey should recognize Macedonia, which is of great importance for the stabilization of the Balkans. Moreover, it can easily become a victim of internal unrest or occupation. and said: “Only in a week we will recognize Macedonia”. That’s how it happened,” Zhelev said later.
Russia was the third country to recognize Macedonia about 6 months later, again at the insistence of Bulgaria.
