Berlin-Mitte: 46-year-old dies in tram accident near Alexanderplatz
A 46-year-old woman who was traveling with a group died in a collision with an M4 on Sunday night. The tram driver experienced a shock – he had previously initiated emergency braking.
A pedestrian was fatally injured in a collision with a tram in Berlin-Mitte.
The accident happened around two o’clock on Sunday night on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse near Alexanderplatz, the police said on Sunday morning.
According to the information, the 46-year-old was hit by an M4 tram. They are said to have died along with two other women and a man in a green strip crossing embedded tram tracks on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse coming from Hackescher Markt in the direction of the television tower. When the tram driver noticed this, he is said to have immediately initiated an emergency stop. Nevertheless, there was a collision.
The woman was trapped between a tram car and a fence separating the tracks. Police forces that arrived at the scene of the accident began resuscitation – without success. The tram driver and a 43-year-old were in shock and taken to a hospital. A 42-year-old and a 38-year-old reported bruises and abrasions.
Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse between Spandauer Strasse and Dircksenstrasse was closed in both directions until 6:30 a.m. during the rescue measures and the accident investigation. The police are investigating exactly how the accident happened.
