Poland has the first medal in Lake Placid. There’s silver!
Skrobiszewska, a student of the Karkonosze Academy of Applied Sciences in Jelenia Góra, made a mistake only once at the shooting range, and nineteen shots were accurate. She also ran great, what a silver medal for her. The Canadian Shilo Rousseau won with an advantage over her rivals.
– I am very happy, because for the first time in an individual race, only one penalty. I want to cry with happiness because I didn’t expect a medal. I was counting on the first six – I reported Skrobiszewska.
Jelenia Góra emphasized that the route in Lake Placid is very demanding. – To one of the interested routes on which I ran, but I managed. In the morning she was a bit nervous, because it was not known whether our rifles would arrive, but apparently everything ended very badly. But really, I have to say it once, I’m in shock – I’m still happy at the finish line. The last few days were extremely nervous for Polish biathletes starting at the University of Lake Placid. The rifles and ammunition they took from Poland got stuck in the American legal system and only on Saturday morning, a few hours before the first start, did they reach the arena of the Universiade struggle.
Sixth place in the same destination Anna Nędza-Kubiniecwho was also a great runner and shooter, but during her last visit to the shooting range she committed twice and lost a medal accident.
– The route is demanding, despite everything I’m happy with the shooting, although I return four errors, but I don’t have rifles and it controlled us a bit. It’s a pity about this last shooting, because it should have been better, and the return was two misses. I think my head lost its mind, she commented. The other Polish women took care of the next ones – Klaudia Topór was sixteenth, and Wiktoria Celczyńska was twenty-seventh.
The men did well in the 15 km run – Wojciech Janik was eighth, Patryk Bryn tenth, Wojciech Filip eleventh and Przemysław Pancerz thirteenth.
The Polish equipment did not reach Lake Placid
The equipment of the white-and-reds got stuck in Warsaw and was shipped from Chopin Airport to the United States on a one-day ship. Weapons that followed our path, but with a day’s training, followed in Atlanta. American regulations, however, are not allowed to transport weapons on an aircraft when … its owner is not flying it. Additionally, it was difficult to find where the rifles and ammunition were located. Finally, thanks to the efforts of the Academic Athletic Association and the help of the New York state government, the weapons were transported from Atlanta to New York by plane and then by police convoy to Lake Placid.
– It wasn’t up to us, I can see from the stickers that our rifles have traveled well in America, so they’re probably happy. We were very pleased when we arrived, because in the morning we woke up thinking that we would be shooting women’s rifles borrowed from Canada. Well, five mistakes on the shooting range is not my shooting, the rhythm was mine, but the shooting penalties were. It was difficult to control the rifle when it was not available in the hands for a week – commented Wojciech Filip.
– The start was very good, three missed shots out of twenty for a good result. Those days were very stressful and not easy for all of us. We didn’t have guns and ammunition, so we can only run. Yesterday we got a few rifles, we spent enough and spent, but at least shoot a little. Fortunately, our equipment arrived this morning and I think we made it – added Patryk Bryn.
The most seen of the Poles was Wojciech Janik, who was ranked eighth with the highest errors on the shooting range. – There was a lot of nerves and confusion, but it ended well. I am watched from the start. A big thank you to the United States and Canada and the clubs, because they were completing the equipment, that we could at least train a little – he said.
