Fight against stray dogs, more animal guards are needed in the province of Rome
More and more zoophile guards are needed to stem the phenomenon of stray dogs in Lazio, especially in the province of Rome. For this reason, the Region, on the initiative of the manager of the health promotion and prevention area, has decided to increase the number of volunteers to be dedicated to the care and monitoring of animals in the regional territories.

It was the same voluntary organizations in Lazio and some regional ASLs that asked for an increase in the appointment of zoophile guards for Rome and its province. Specifically, we will go from the current 150 units to 200, in order to increase the controls concerning the prevention of stray dogs which weigh on the coffers of the municipalities and to increase the inspections on the feline colonies. Instead, 100 zoophilic guards will be nominated for each of the provinces of Frosinone, Rieti, Viterbo and Frosinone. It is possible to change the territory, for organizational reasons, of a voluntary zoophile guard, subject to the consent of the interested party.
What zoophilic guards do
The animal guards promote and disseminate information on current legislation on the protection of animal welfare and prevention of stray dogs, supervising compliance with the relative provisions. In particular, it supports the staff of local health authorities, municipalities and other law enforcement agencies inspections to verify the state of health of the animals and ascertain the technical-sanitary aspects relating to the control of stray dogs and the verification of damages attributable to feral stray dogs.
Zoophile guards also have the task of ensuring that animal owners, especially dogs, keep their four-legged friends on a leash, collect their droppings, and that they are registered in the regional canine registry. The zoophile guards also have the task of reporting eventualities acts of cruelty towards animals.
