Antwerp city council definitively withdraws license for shisha bar and night shop | Antwerp
AntwerpA shisha bar in the Statiestraat in the Antwerp station area and a night shop on the Bredabaan in Merksem have lost their operating permits, after being broken. That’s what the city’s governing board has.
In shisha bar The Sultanz have been secured since 2015. The owner had already received a normal warning twice. Last year, however, confirmations were made again of defects in hygiene, fire safety and smoking legislation. For example, shisha pipe mouthpieces were found on the ground, as was a bowl of burning coals that visitors passed through. The windows were plastered with advertising and decorations to make it impossible to look in from the outside.
In night shop Benelux on the Bredabaan in Merksem, the first phases date from 2021. At that time, there was a non-licensed telecom shop and there were improvements regarding fire safety and hygiene. The owner promised to carry out renovation work and to stop temporarily in between, but in practice the store remained open and problems followed.
The police also spoke of an unsafe situation due to products that were parked in the passageways, a TV that caused a black spot on the ceiling, and a lot of loose cables and multiple plugs.
