New company: A solar ray made in Luxembourg in Hollerich
This is the story of an idyll between a traditional Luxembourg group, active in technical building engineering, Socom (1,200 employees), and a small Belgian company producing photovoltaic panels, Evocells (27 employees). Fruit of the partnership, the baby, baptized Solarcells Luxembourg, is scheduled for September. It will see the light of day in Hollerich, in the former buildings of the tobacco company Heintz Van Landewyck. Cost of the operation: 500,000 euros, borne equally by the two lovebirds.
“This project for the production of photovoltaic panels in Luxembourg helps us to strengthen our energy independence and accelerates the energy transition”, says Claude Turmes, Minister of Energy. “It is intended to first serve local demand with a production made in Luxembourg. It’s great to see a company like Socom embarking on this new field,” adds Franz Fayot, Minister of the Economy.
President of Socom, Marc Thein sees in it “an opportunity to help the government in the energy transition”. Solarcells Luxembourg, which will employ 20 people, “will produce 100,000 panels per year, with the possibility of doubling production from 2026. These panels, which are still efficient after ten years, will be 8 to 10% more expensive than those of current sectors”, concluded Marc Thein.
