Kaag: The Netherlands is open to token-dead digital euro – IT Pro – News
Banks are already saying no en masse these days from the point of view of combating money laundering and terrorism, and we have a lot of that. Costs us loads of money.
in the end it is more of the same, see also the conflicting interests that Kaag leaves in the middle. In short, there is no nice answer to that. We ‘think’ that we should check everyone, because otherwise you can’t prevent effectively. Welcome dystopian future, where your control over your money no longer exists and where the uncertainty of security (?) takes precedence over your true privacy.
Everyone should realize that this is where the great importance of cash lies. Money is power. Digitized money is power that has been taken from you. Bank transfer could not yet be defended, but here too you can see that we are getting the short end of the stick, we are already doing that. We are paying more and more for a service that makes money with our money. Sliding scale.
Cash does not have these problems because it is not digital. The idea that you could secure this digitally in an alternative way is an illusion, because there are several other possibilities, and we are going to reuse / abuse them.
All in all: keep withdrawing some money now and then and pay cash an X number of times a month, just because you can. It only has advantages:
1. Money physically passing through your hands feels more like spending money and makes you think a little longer about an expense.
2. You maintain a robust fallback system if the power, the internet, or a payment service ever fails. Not bad for a continent that is currently at war, I think, and where evidence is trickling in that we are dependent and have no reserve (systems).
3. You retain power over your money, because as long as cash exists it is linked to ‘digital’ money and cannot be disconnected, so you also retain power over your digital money. The bank run remains possible with cash, digital is even a bit more difficult and easier to pull out of your hands.
4. In the meantime, you can easily keep up with new payment services/methods and even a digital euro. But not at the expense of cash, let’s be convinced.
