Marseille: the State invests 22.5 million euros in the cinema sector
Make Marseille “the Silicon Valley of the Mediterranean”? This is the ambition of the government which has just unveiled its plan to make Marseille a nerve center European cinema. Thus, as 20 Minutes reports on Monday January 9, the State and the communities presented the outlines of the cinema component of the “Marseille en grand” plan. Wanted by Emmanuel Macron, the device must make the second city of France “the capital of cinema in the Mediterranean”. With 1,200 days of filming per year, Marseille is the most filmed city in France after Paris.
To do this, Rima Abdul Malak, the Minister of Culture went to Marseille on Monday. She unveiled several major projects around the cinema through the signing in the prefecture of a protocol between the state and local authorities, with the key to a check for 22.5 million euros. A cine-factory, that is to say a film school promote social diversity, will settle on the docks of the city. Marseille is also equipping itself with a logistics base to support the production of films in the city. Another announcement, the modernization of the Belle de Mai media center and the creation of a Marseille branch of the French cinematheque.

The ambition of this plan, included in the “Marseille en grand” of the President of the Republic, is to “make the second city of France, one of the strongholds of European cinema”, indicates the minister. During her visit, Rima Abdul Malak praised “the light, the diversity, the youth and the genius of many Marseille directors such as Robert Guediguian or Cédric Jimenez”. It even aims to make Marseille “the Silicon Valley of the Mediterranean”. Other projects, particularly around the production of video games, are to be announced in the coming months.
