icebreakers on the IJsselmeer, police on skis and a car on skates – Wel.nl
Beautiful images from the Polygoon newsreel in the winter of 1985 show how the Netherlands divided into a beautiful white winter wonderland for several weeks.
In 1985, snow and ice caused a lot of problems for just about all transport options in our country. Trains and points freeze over, airplanes and runways are cleared of snow and ice with all their might; icebreakers even sail on the IJsselmeer to clear a sailing route between thick ice floes.
Camels, brown bears and cheetahs trot awkwardly through the snow at the zoo. Horse riding festivities with ring-stitching competitions, cross-country skiers in the field and in the woods and even a police patrol on skis pass by the historical images, which have been put on the internet by the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision.
Extra: beautiful images of a snow storm that shut down our country in 1958. “Birquettes and flamethrowers are probably used again to thaw the frozen bills,” said legendary newsreader Philip Bloemendal. And also: “Many detour cyclists in an ungentlemanly way with the national knowledge.”
