Impressive photos from its Metro works Thessaloniki announced by ATTIKO METRO SA, revealing a new city under the excavations.
The path of the Thessaloniki Metro, which crosses its center, follows the axis of the main streets of the urban fabric of the ancient city which it was flanked by colonnades and arcades and had a 16m wide roadway.
It started from the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea), today’s Vardario Square, and ended at the Kassandriotik Gate, today’s Syntrivani Square.
In the area of ​​two of these central gates of the old city, outside of which the richest parts of its cemeteries are developed, the construction works of Metro stations bring to light important antiquities belonging to different time periods.
Important antiquities and in fact representative of many periods of the city’s life also come to light during the construction of the two other Metro stations located within the limits of the historic city center.
These are the stations of Venizelos and Ag. Sophia, which occupy important positions in ancient Thessaloniki.
In Thessaloniki the largest archaeological excavation ever carried out in N. Greece, covering an area of ​​20,000 sq.m.
The archaeological works, with a total budget of 132.6 million euros, have brought to light 130,000 archaeological findings.
Regarding the Venizelos station, the study of the removal and relocation of the antiquities has been approved by the Ministry of Culture and the KAS and they have already started the work.
