Truck market. Nors Group sweeps competition in Portugal
In a Portuguese truck market that decreased by 4% in Portugal, the Nors Group swept away the competition in 2022 with the two brands Volvo Trucks and Renault Trucks registering a growth of 15.8%. The Swedish brand took the lead.
The Volvo Group’s two truck brands – Volvo Trucks and Renault Trucks -, distributed in Portugal by companies owned by the nors grouprocked the national market competition in 2022.
According to data from A CAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal, the two brands registered 1239 trucks in 2022 against 1044 in the previous year, which translates into a growth of 15.8%. The total market, on the other hand, recorded a drop of 4.0%, with 4095 units delivered.
The heavy-duty brand represented by Auto-Sueco, owned by the Nors Group, that stood out the most was Volvo trucks which displaced Mercedes-Benz Trucks from the leadership, having closed the year 2022 with 768 units registered. It will be a reference that Volvo was the most sold both in the segment of rigids and tractors.
According to Auto Sueco Portugal, national representative of Volvo Trucks, this result “confirms the preference that operators in this important sector of the national economy continue to devote to the brand, aware of its Quality, Durability and Operational Efficiency”.
Renault Trucks, in turn, occupied the fourth position in the ACAP heavy truck sales table, with 471 units registered in 2022, an 8% drop compared to 2021.
Despite having lost the leadership and dropped to the second position, the Mercedes-Benz Trucks still grew by 2.2 in 2022, having registered 608 units.
Ford Trucks on the rise
On a strong rise is Ford Trucks, which not only benefits from a strong commercial dynamic, but also from the availability of the product, which allowed it to rise to third place, with 478 units registered, which represents a growth of 102.5% compared to 2021.
AN ford trucks records this feat just three years after entering the Portuguese market and in a period marked by an adverse national and international situation. Bruno Oliveira, CEO of Ford Trucks in Portugal, considers that this is an important goal in the history of the brand in Portugal and is the result of the confidence of customers and drivers in the brand and in the F-Max model.
“These results demonstrate the confidence of customers and drivers in our brand and models, but it was also thanks to a motivated team that it was possible to reach third place in the national ranking of vehicles of this type”, says the CEO of Ford Trucks in Portugal.
Scania and DAF to forget
Scania, in turn, rose in fifth position and registered a stagnation in sales, with 462 units registered, a decrease of 0.4%. This is due to the fact that some traditional Scania customers are opting for proposals from other brands. The best result was Iveco, which managed to grow 10.1%, registering 403 units.

To forget was the performance of DAF Trucks with a drop in registrations of 60.1%, with only 287 units registered. Not even the fact that it won the title of “International Truck of the Year” for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2203, with the new generation XF, XG, XG+ and XD, respectively, was of much use to the brand in Portugal. The little (none) promotion of the product and the fact that it did not benefit from vehicles purchased by foreign companies but registered in our country explain this hecatomb.
AN GUY also had a result below expectations, having registered only 257 units, that is, 52.0% less than in 2021. The explanation lies in the lack of product availability because the brand was one of the most suspended by the war in Ukraine, a country which produced components for the German brand vehicles.
