Sare, the movement for the rights of Basque prisoners, recognizes advances in prison policy but urges “to leave the emergency measures” and also to do so “as soon as possible”Therefore, it asks citizens to participate in the demonstration that will take place this Saturday, January 7, in Bilbao, at 5:00 p.m. starting from the Casilla, under the motto “Etxera bidea gertu”.
The platform wants to take the streets “of dignity, of hope for the coexistence and demanding respect for human rights that are systematically violated in the case of Basque prisoners and their families”.
The objective is for the mobilization to be “a turning point to vindicate the path that we still need to reach our objectives”, says Sare, adding that “there are many pending objectives and its solution depends on the momentum of the Basque political and union majorities, but also on the mobilization of society”.
And it is that, according to, there are sectors “that do not want to change the situation” such as “the National Court that, through the public prosecutor’s office, constantly blocks the way back home” of the ETA prisoners by applying the removal and locks to third grade and the permits with “the clear intention of hindering the steps that are being taken in this country in favor of coexistence and peace.”
However, he maintains, “today we are at the gates of putting an end” to the policy of distancing, and “we have to continue advancing to bring the process of returning home to the end”, a purpose that Sare has supported with numerous rallies called for on December 30 and 31 as a preamble to the Bilbao demonstration.
In an interview granted to the “Faktoria” program of Euskadi Irratia, the spokesman for Sare, Inaxio OiarzabalHe denied that behind this new image there is a demand for amnesty.
“We are not asking for amnesty, we are driving the process back home”, has remarked. She has pointed out that the new image and the motto “Etxera” illustrate the way back home as legally established. In his opinion, some sectors have deliberately wanted to create confusion. In any case, he wanted to make it clear that he was working to put an end to the emergency legislation and so that the process of returning home for prisoners could be carried out normally.
After 34 years of distancing policy, Inaxio Oiarzabal hopes that February or March will be the end of the distancing policy. “The numbers are there. There are still some 13 prisoners in Spanish jails and until there is a decision for their transfer (to Euskal Herria) we would not say that it is finished,” he added.
9 out of 10, in Basque prisons
147 ETA prisoners are in Basque prisons, almost half of them in Zaballa, 66, and in Spanish prisons there are only 14 prisoners, the furthest away in Madrid, and their approach is expected shortly.
In the French State there are 12 inmates, all except one, in Lanemezan, in the closest prison to Euskal Herria. In short, this most illustrative data: almost 9 out of 10 prisoners are already serving their sentence in Basque prisons.
