Scientists of the Far Eastern Geological Institute of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2023 will begin to study the skeleton of an ichthyosaur found in 2022 on Russky Island in Vladivostok, reports news agency DEITA.RU.
In the summer of 2022, biology students found two fragments of ichthyosaur ribs aged 230-240 million years on the shores of the Russian language island in Vladivostok. The first case of finding the remains of an ichthyosaur in Russian was in 2014. individuals were found in which the jaws were adapted for crushing mollusks. Ichthyosaurs are a group of extinct marine reptiles that had a shape similar to the transparency of fish and dolphins.
According to TASS with reference to the Primorsky Oceanarium, such fossils are quite rare in the world, and the find immediately attracted representatives of the paleontological community. Desire to participate in research work with found specimens already established internationally, including among specialists in ancient reptiles. The study of the remains of the skeleton will begin in 2023 on the basis of the Primorsky Ocean, including specialists from the Far Eastern Skeletal Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As Yury Bolotsky, head of the laboratory of paleontology at the Institute of Geology and Nature Management of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, previously explained to TASS, Triassic marine reptiles were poorly discovered in Russia. Upon preliminary examination of the fossils, it was found that this ichthyosaur was tropical, very peculiar, and probably fed on shellfish. Historical, scientific and social finds are indisputable: it spreads the islands that at the site of the capture of the Russian there was a sea in which life was seething.
