Rouge Mémoire is a site created 11 years ago which aims to retrace the history of Stade Rennais through figures, images but also through the archive. Currently, the site is trying to go back in time in order to have all the reconstructions of the Breton match sheets. Finally, from his game sheets, he generated many statistics.
“It is never a competition that we abandon”
WG: In what state of mind are the Rennais before tackling this match against Bordeaux?
So, the Coupe de France is a bit like the trophy that we can achieve and that we achieved 4 years ago. In the end, we are somewhat in the state of mind of wanting to have a good run, it is never a competition that we abandon even if during the last editions, we have been eliminated in the first tours.
In reality, it is a competition that is as much the envy of players, managers and especially supporters. However, on Monday we faced Nice with a good result which consolidates us in the first places of the championship.
Given the current circumstances (Bordeaux in Ligue 2), wouldn’t the Rennais have a particular motivation for this match?
I think that Bordeaux is in Ligue 1 or in Ligue 2 does not change much the interest of this match for us. You have to pass. Afterwards, we know that Bordeaux is not in its place, in my opinion it should be in Ligue 1. Afterwards, it is the strategic choices and the sporting orientations that lead in Ligue 2 and I think that on this Bordeaux is planted for a few years.
As far as the Coupe de France is concerned, we don’t have any additional motivation because Bordeaux is in Ligue 2 or not. Last year, we played Nancy who was in Ligue 2 and we went to the trap on penalties. So, I hope it’s a lesson that has been well learned to make a match a little more serious this time.
“Our strong point is the collective”
What are your main strengths?
Today, our strong point is the collective. Afterwards, I was talking about Martin Terrier who was our best player and therefore difficult to replace. But, the philosophy of the workforce overall is to be able to switch players and that the collective remains at the same level.
In the end, that’s what’s interesting in Rennes, it’s that in all positions we can change players and keep a team capable of producing game focused on the offensive.
This is what we brought to Bruno Génésio, that is to say a philosophy where there is the will to do solid and mastered math, but despite everything at the end of the end the objective of scoring at least one but of more than the adversary.
In terms of player, our strong point was Martin Terrier, he not being there, there are Benjamin Bourigeaud, Lovro Majer and Amine Gouiri who must compensate for the absence of the former Lyonnais by not making one more each in their parts. So it’s a bit like the new leaders of the attack.
Can the unfortunate Martin Terrier affect the morale of the team before this match in your opinion?
So, from the team, no, because on Monday against Nice, the injury hit everyone’s head until half-time. However, in the second half, Stade Rennais gave a very good performance which was rewarded with a but at the end of the game.
But, I think the team overcame that. On the side of the supporters, it is a little more difficult to cash in on his injury. Still, for gamers, I don’t think it affects more than that.
On the other hand, it can affect our game. We will have to learn life without him and reorganize our team because he is not a replaceable player. So, we will have to reorganize the tactical disposition or review the roles of each in order to continue to be efficient without him.
“The right time for the Girondins to reappear in the eyes of French football”
What is your prediction for this game?
So what I hope for and what I predict is Rennes qualifying. Preferably before the penalty shootout but despite everything I think it will be a game with a very tight score. Finally, if it is necessary to choose I would say 0-1 or 1-2.
However, in the Coupe de France, we are safe from anything, even against amateur clubs, there are surprises and for once Bordeaux is far from being an amateur club. Moreover, I think that the Girondins have prestige and that in Ligue 2, they are a little forgotten.
Ultimately, this Coupe de France is the right time for them to reappear in the eyes of French football. Nevertheless, I hope they won’t but despite everything I think they will be up to the occasion.
