Bilal El Khannouss explains why Yassine Bounou did not face the Red Devils
While he was present at the time of the national anthems, Yassine Bounou did not finally face Belgium in the second group match at the 2022 World Cup. Bilal El Khannouss explains.
It was one of the mysteries of Belgium-Morocco, which even trapped the TV and radio commentators at the start of the match: why Yassine Bounou, indisputable holder of Morocco, announces himself present on the score sheet and even… present when going on the lawn and broadcasting the national anthems, has he not faced the Red Devils? The news then circulated: Bounou would have felt unwell shortly before the start of the match, and therefore had to be replaced by Monir El Kajoui.
Bilal El KhannoussMoroccan international selected at the last minute, explained to Het Laatste Nieuws behind the scenes of this astonishing absence. “Bounou received injections against pain before the matches”, reveals the Racing Genk midfielder. “He reacted badly to one of these injections, and started to see the disorder just before the meeting”. The mystery is finally lifted. Fortunately for Morocco, El Kajoui will play a good match against Belgium, and Yassine Bounou will be back – and brilliant – for the rest of the tournament.
