About 20% of Ukrainian refugees want to stay in Bulgaria – Society – Bulgaria – Social network
The rest go to Western Europe
About 20% of Ukrainian refugees want to stay in Bulgaria. Another significant part of them are heading to Western Europe.
“This group wants to go to the Western European countries where they think they will be better. And here the problem is not only of the Bulgarian state, but of the whole society, because these people must have the opportunity to make an informed decision. You should have general information about the Bulgarian state, about the administration, about the order and about the countries for which you can get one or another package of support”, commented Ivan Sharenkov, a real consultant on migration issues.
Those fleeing the war in Ukraine have many options for support once they are granted refugee status.
“The law says that a refugee has all the rights of Bulgarian citizens, and this gives them the right to health care, education, professional qualifications, housing, language training, social packages, as well as for Bulgarian citizens,” added Ivan Sharenkov.
The problem in the lack of sufficient awareness is the language barrier.
“Among them there are people with high professional qualifications, they are doing well. They know what they can do. You find ways, we know cases of surgeons, of very good doctors who are already working in Bulgarian hospitals”, specified the legal consultant.
