Will you give the Pergamon Altar to Turkey? The German undersecretary said ‘let’s return it’
The Pergamon Altar of Zeus also arrived after Germany returned the historical Benin bronze statues stolen from present-day Nigeria during the colonial period. Saraya Gomis, the undersecretary responsible for combating diversity and consumption in the state of Berlin, voiced the return proposals.
Gomis stated that the Pergamon Altar, as well as the Nefertiti bust brought from Egypt, should be returned to which they belonged, and said, “from an anti-discrimination point of view, he should say this: All cultural products from other parts of the world do not belong to us, they are found here as leaks”. . .
Pergamon Zeus Altar was built by the Attalos dynasty, which ruled the Pergamon kingdom in the ancient city of Pergamon, which is now known as Pergamon. It is a monumental, religious building built in the 2nd century. These temple ruins were taken to Prussia of that time by the German Engineer Carl Humann in the 1870s.
The inscription is on display at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
Turkey insistently conveyed to Germany that the Pergamon Zeus Altar was unlawfully consumed at that time for the exit of the country. However, despite Turkey’s persistent requests for documents and information, Germany has remained silent for two years and does not respond to requests.
