Shops Mestdagh become ‘Intermarché by Mestdagh’ and open their doors again on Wednesday | Brussels
Intermarché closed at the beginning of last year that all stores of the supermarket group Mestdagh that they operate under the logo of Carrefour Market and Carrefour Express would take over. The franchise contract between Mestdagh and Carrefour ran until the end of December. Since Tuesday, after confirmation by the Belgian competition authority, the takeover is really final. Intermarché also appointed a new CEO: Guillaume Beuscart replaces Emmanuel Coria.
Intermarché talks about a “historic step” for its development in Belgium. We will need everyone to succeed in our ambition to become a definite player in the retail sector. As a result of the takeover, the group has 163 stores in our country, representing a turnover of 1,432 billion euros per year. In Wallonia and Brussels, the chain says it accounts for a larger share of 12.4 percent.
In mid-December, the unions at Mestdagh discovered action at the Belgian headquarters of Intermarché to denounce the uncertainty surrounding the takeover for the nearly 2,000 capacity. Until now, Intermarché only worked with franchise stores and therefore operates under a different joint committee than Mestdagh. Trade union representative Myriam Delmée (Setca) fears interrogation and/or a deterioration in working conditions. The social partners will not get more clarity about the future plans until next Monday.
