Rome, mother and daughter died at home in San Basilio: murder is being investigated
Yellow on the death of two women, mother and daughtera Saint Basil. When the firefighters entered the apartment on the third floor of via Fabriano 31, in the popular lots, in the night between Monday and Tuesday, they found the two bodies lying on the kitchen floor. They would not have evident wounds on the bodies, nor did the scientific police subsequently find signs of forced entry, fingerprints of strangers or disorder in the house to arouse particular suspicions or which could lead to believe that strangers have entered. But then how is it possible that both died at the same time? In short, the causes of the two deaths are a mystery. The Prosecutor’s Office Rome, yesterday, opened a file for double manslaughter and ordered autopsies, which will be performed at the Tor Vergata polyclinic. The results of the autopsy tests will help the investigators understand what really happened.

THE ALARM
The victims are Carmela Aquilani, 90, originally from Rieti, and Augusta Grimandi, 57. The old woman had heart disease, while her daughter suffered from an addiction to alcohol and psychotropic drugs; she rarely left the house, except to do the shopping at the supermarket for her and her mother, especially since her husband had died, a lack of her for which she had suffered a lot. They lived in the same building: one on the second floor and one on the third. The alarm was raised by Mrs. Grimandi’s two twenty-year-old daughters who had not lived in the area for some time. Francesca and Valentina hadn’t heard from their mother and grandmother since the afternoon of New Year’s Eve, the last time Francesca had seen them was just last Saturday. Then silence with respect to their attempts to contact them to simply find out how they were, to exchange greetings for the new year.
THE ALARM
Since they hadn’t answered the phone for the past two days, the sisters therefore decided to go in person to San Basilio late Monday evening. They tried ringing the bells, knocking on both doors, but nothing. No reply. Until they decided to alert the single number for emergencies 112 which brought the firefighters of the “6A” team to the scene. In fact, the girls did not have the keys to the two houses. Thus, around one in the morning the firefighters tried to enter the apartment on the second floor: the door was closed, but without a warrant, and there was no one inside.
Then they broke into the apartment on the floor above – also in this case it was not locked from the inside and it was not necessary to break down the door, which was opened with a plate – and in the kitchen they found the bodies of the two women earth. On the table were the blister packs of some medicines. Now the agents of the San Basilio police station are investigating, who intervened on the spot together with the scientific police who carried out an inspection during the night. Prosecutor Mario Dovinola entrusted the coroner on duty with the task of carrying out the expert examination of the bodies, asking to establish the causes of the deaths and which of the two occurred first.
THE HYPOTHESIS
It cannot be excluded that there may have been a gas leak in the apartment, which however was not seized. For example, women may have died from carbon monoxide fumes, even if a stove was not found in the apartment. The other hypothesis is that Augusta Grimandi died first, due to illness or something else, and the 90-year-old mother, seeing her 57-year-old daughter lying on the ground, may have had a fatal heart attack for her which was heart disease. In short, we will have to wait for the autopsy to have other useful information for the investigation. In the meantime, the keys to the apartment on the third floor were entrusted to the two relatives of the victims, who took personal effects and valuables from the homes, also to avoid theft or raids by occupation professionals in social housing.
