In LuxembourgChiche, we go through January without drinking alcohol?
LUXEMBOURG – What if, in January, we resisted “social pressure” to drink a glass of alcohol? The challenge is launched until the 31st. They are hundreds to participate in the Grand Duchy.
Officially, the glass of wine or the glass of champagne whistled at midnight on New Year’s Eve was in 2023. But regardless, the methods aside to launch a challenge that returns for the third year in Luxembourg: the Sober Buddy Challenge, or “no booze month.” Organized by the Cancer Foundation, the challenge launched on Sunday and the goal, as you will have understood, is to hold out until January 31 without drinking a drop of alcohol.
“With a friend, a family member or why not their work colleagues (…) the participants challenge themselves not to drink alcohol for a month”, explains the Cancer Foundation which ensures that 3,700 people have also raised the Sober Buddy Challenge since its launch in the country, in this case in January 2021 and January 2022. “The Sober Buddy Challenge wants to prove that you can take care of your health without sacrificing your pleasure”, assures the organization .
Road accidents, cancers…
Because the opportunities to “have a drink” are numerous and the temptation great, depriving yourself of it is “a real challenge”, concedes the Cancer Foundation, which even speaks of “social pressure”. And yet limiting the consumption of alcohol has a much broader interest since alcohol was involved in 17% of serious accidents and 38% of fatalities last year in the Grand Duchy. Also, three-quarters of immediate license withdrawals were alcohol-related.
Even without being a very heavy consumer, alcohol also has an influence on the development of many pathologies such as breast, colon or mouth cancers, certain cardiovascular and digestive diseases, diseases of the nervous system or psychic disorders. “Alcohol is now recognized as a second avoidable risk factor in the development of cancers”, slips the Ministry of Health.
The Sober Buddy Challenge is therefore more than a little game between friends. According to the Foundation, the results in 2021 and 2022 are significant: “47% of participants reported having better sleep, 33% noticed weight loss, 26% were more easily confused”. Almost all of the people (92.5%) say they are “ready to retain the experience”. Chick?
