619 Ukrainian children in Salzburg’s schools
training
At the turn of the year, 619 children and young people from the Ukraine attend a school in Salzburg. As best they can, they take part in the lessons there as usual. However, numerous children still attend German remedial classes in order to be able to follow the lessons in the long run.
Around a quarter of Ukraine’s high school students – namely 153 – attend a secondary school. Around three quarters – exactly 466 – go to compulsory school.
This year, the state of Salzburg set up a separate office for Ukrainian families to look after and coordinate them. Myroslava Mashkarynets has been responsible for all school matters for Ukrainians since April. She was born in Ukraine and is studying to become a teacher for religion and German in Salzburg. A large part of her work is currently translating: on the one hand for Ukrainian families, but on the other hand also for teaching staff and directors.
For the Ukrainians, the main thing is information about the peculiarities of the Austrian school system and about which schools can continue after about the fourth grade has been completed.
Care cost 200,000 euros in 2022
In 2022, the state of Salzburg spent 200,000 euros on this organisation. Also included are two Ukrainian school psychologists who provide support in dealing with traumatic experiences. In many families, the father is still at the front. More money for this work has already been budgeted, says Education Minister Daniela Gutschi (ÖVP).
619 Ukrainian students attend schools in Salzburg, most of them in Flachgau, in the state capital, in Tennengau and in Pinzgau. Eight Czech teachers also work here at educational institutions, mostly to support classes with refugee children and young people.
