“Rome clings to the pain of the faithful from all over the world”. These are the mayor’s words Robert Gualtieri learned the news of Death of Pope Ratzinger. Shortly after the announcement by the director of the Holy See Press Office Matteo Bruni this morning, the mayor wanted to address a farewell message to the Pope Emeritus, who died at the age of ninety-five on December 31, 2022, after a long illness. “Enormous condolences for the passing of Benedict XVI, a great theologian who with his magisterium has been able to accompany the Church in the contemporary world” writes Gualtieri on Twitter. The greeting from the mayor of Rome was not long in coming and it was a message of esteem for Ratzinger, but at the same time also of closeness to the Catholics who have prayed for him in these long days, in which his health conditions are getting worse: “The city clings to the pain of the faithful from all over the world”.

The funeral home with the body of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will be open from Monday 2 January 2023. Heads of state and political leaders from all over the world but also thousands of faithful will be able to go to St. Peter’s Basilica to greet him on certain times and methods. The Holy See has already established the strict protocol that is activated on these occasions, including the security measures necessary to welcome the large number of people who will reach the Basilica. The body of the Pope Emeritus will remain on display for a few days, until the funeral and burial. The funeral is scheduled for Thursday 5 January 2023 from 9.30 as announced by the Vatican Press Office in the morning in St. Peter’s Square. Funerals that will be “solemn, but sober” as per his wishes. Pope Francis will celebrate them.
