Lithuania and Germany are getting on each other’s nerves more and more: the ambassador’s words are bad signals for Lithuanians
Associate professor at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU). Ignas Kalpokas brigade evaluated the question on Friday, in the “Actual interview” program of “Žiniai Radio”.
“There are objective and subjective reasons here. Objective ones are when the more discussions take place, the less clear it is how both the Lithuanian and German parties interpret this agreement, and what the agreement actually includes.
And although it would actually be more expedient for a political matter to be established, the minister and the president are aware of this, the fact that our current situation between the Presidency of the Government is such that neither one nor the other allows the opportunity to publicly wash one’s laundry,” the political scientist observed. .
On the one hand, according to I. Kalpok, this is a natural process, because it is important for society to know such things.
“On the other hand, looking at Germany’s position at the moment, with the ambassador’s public statements, it is possible to feel the position of a great power from Germany’s side – roughly what those little Lithuanians are explaining to us here at our booth,” VDU said. associate professor
In such a situation, according to him, an escalating conflict may arise, in which both sides “the further they go, the more they annoy each other.”
“Those responsibilities are really often a bit separated, especially within the Government – we see for the first time that a ministry is needed to the end, what each one does, what their positions are, that is really missing,” observed I. Kalpokas.
According to him, individual players that are difficult for the party to control are NSGK chairman Laurynas Kasčiūnas and URK chairman Žygymantas Pavilionis.
In June, Gitanas Nausėda and Olaf Scholz visited the Silvester Žukauskas training ground in Pabrade, where German forces are stationed.
“However, in this case, I would see the greatest responsibility in the Presidency – if the ministers of foreign affairs and national defense are not able to talk, then it should probably be called to the Presidency, everyone should sit down, talk, and find where Lithuania’s interest lies, what is needed . the tone we pick up when communicating with Germany“, commented the political scientist.
I. Kalpokas also commented on the insight of former prime minister Saulius Skvernelis that the days of the army commander may be numbered.
“I think there is a possibility. We can see – a little earlier there was a public conflict between the commander of the army and the president over the supply of howitzers to Ukraine. It seems to me that the army commander currently has no friends among the highest heads of state. This can really affect future prospects,” said the expert.
He said that he did not think that Mr. Landsberg’s public rhetoric and speeches could harm the politician himself.
“All the more so because they have a resonance among at least some of the influential figures in the conservative party,” observed I. Kalpokas.
This issue, according to the presenter, is an opportunity to score political points, as the issue is sensitive.
“On the other hand, we can agree that if the agreement is so open to interpretation that there are already ongoing discussions every month and there is no sign of a conclusion that they may be in the near future, that in a certain sense there is some logic in the statement of the foreign minister that however, the president, as the most important person in foreign policy, should take the initiative and try to get some solutions together with his German counterpart. That might really be necessary,” said the associate professor of VMU.
