Churros: A Spanish hit, for which there were queues in the summer in Mělník and at Christmas in Prague
Every country has its own special customs and special dishes for Christmas, which must not be missing from the festive table. In Spain, people can’t imagine the holiday without churros – elongated sweet pastries covered in sugar, which are dipped in caramel or chocolate.
The Spanish wait until 11 o’clock in the evening for Christmas Eve dinner. Only then does the whole family gather at the table, eat together and have a sweet treat for dessert, without which it would never be the real Christmas for them.
And this despite the fact that it is not a typical holiday dish. Churros are a sweet that Spaniards eat all year round, the server writes Mother Mouse Clubhouse. Nevertheless, it is somehow more festive for them during Christmas.
Churros made their way to some summer festivals and Christmas markets this year. Our editors came across them in the summer in Mělník, where there was a queue for them, and on Náměstí Míru in Prague, where there was also great interest in this Spanish confection.
If you haven’t had the chance to try this dish yet, you should definitely change that. You can easily prepare churros at home. You don’t really need anything special for this. The recipe is also very simple and quick.
Easy recipe
To prepare homemade churros, you will need 310 milliliters of whole milk, 60 grams of butter, 15 grams of cane sugar, a pinch of salt, 140 grams of plain flour, 3 eggs, oil for frying, 150 milliliters of whipping cream and 100 grams of high-quality chocolate. Prepare cinnamon sugar for coating.
First, put the milk, butter and sugar in a saucepan over a low heat, stirring constantly, bring everything to a boil. You should get a dough, which you then move to a bowl and add 3 eggs, which you work into it with a whisk. Fill a decorating bag with a wider tip with the dough prepared in this way.
Then squeeze the dough into the hot oil, where it smiles into typical sticks. Around Christmas, however, stick or horseshoe shapes are also often made. Afterwards, dry the churros on a paper towel and roll them in cinnamon sugar.
In the meantime, prepare the icing from the cream and chocolate in a water bath. You can either pour it over the churros straight away, or leave it thinner and then dip the candy into it.
Your whole family will enjoy the soft pastry, and you’ll surely understand why the Spaniards can’t do without it during the holidays and throughout the year.
the only drawback is that it is not exactly a healthy delicacy. Nothing should be overdone. Definitely don’t overdo the churros, so your stomach doesn’t blame you.
