Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Eredivisie: when will the major European leagues resume
With Christmas behind us, attention turns to a jam-packed fixture list for Boxing Day in the Premier League. Brentford host Tottenham in the opener on Monday afternoon before the rest of the English top flight resume their campaigns.
Here, Planet Sport reveals when the other major European competitions resume.
Ligue 1 – December 28
Top-flight football returns to France just two days after England, with six matches taking place on Wednesday December 28.
Reigning champions and leaders of the championship, Paris Saint-Germain will be one of the teams in action during the reception of Strasbourg.
However, the first two games that day will see a huge relegation drop between 18th-placed AC Ajaccio and bottom-ranked Angers, as well as Troyes versus Nantes.
Portugal League – 28 December
The action in Portugal also resumes on Wednesday 28 December.
Two matches will be on the menu as Portimonense take on Casa Pia and Arouca, hosts FC Porto.
League leaders Benfica will resume their campaign two days later with an exciting trip to third-placed Braga.
La Liga – December 29
Spanish football will mark its big comeback on Thursday, December 29.
Three matches will be offered, starting with a clash between Girona and Rayo Vallecano.
Real Betis will host Athletic Bilbao later today, before Atletico Madrid take on Elche in the main event.
Real Madrid are expected to return a day later with a trip to Valladolid. Barcelona, on the other hand, face Espanyol in a highly anticipated derby on New Year’s Eve.
Series A – January 4
Unfortunately, football fans will have to wait until early 2023 to see the return of Serie A.
Competition resumes on Wednesday, January 4, with a full fixture series that day.
AC Milan, for example, travel to Salernitana for an early kick-off. Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma will host Bologna later in the afternoon, while city rivals Lazio travel to Lecce.
Juventus are also on the road and will face Cremonese. However, the big main event will take place in the evening as Inter host Napoli in a potential blockbuster.
Eredivisie – January 6
The action in the Netherlands will return the first full weekend of 2023.
Friday, January 6 will see the first game between top-flight Twente and FC Emmen wrestlers.
PSV will resume their campaign a day later against Sparta Rotterdam. League leaders Feyenoord and defending champions Ajax will play on Sunday this weekend against Utrecht and Nijmegen.
Bundesliga – January 20
While most competitions return fairly soon after the World Cup break, the Bundesliga will keep us waiting until the end of January.
Football returns to Germany on Friday January 20, with Bayern Munich traveling to RB Leipzig.
Freiburg, which is currently Bayern’s main rival for the title, will be back a day later with an away game against Wolfsburg.
As for Jude Bellingham and co, Borussia Dortmund will be back on Sunday January 22, with a clash at home against Augsburg.
